What You Should Expect When You Place Your Baby For Adoption

If you are pregnant and planning on placing your baby for adoption, you may be confused and concerned about the adoption process. When you have never gone through it before, the adoption process can seem quite daunting and confounding. However, it does not have to be that way. Get to know some of what you can expect when you decide to place your baby for adoption. Then, you can be sure you are prepared for the process and know what is expected of you throughout.

Expect to Be Able to Choose the Parents for Your Baby

When you decide to place your baby for adoption, you do not lose all of your parental rights right away. You are still technically the parent of this baby until the paperwork is signed and the baby is born and given to its family.

As such, you will have the final say in who will be the parents of your baby. Most likely, you will be working with an adoption agency for your adoption process. The adoption agency will present you with candidates, usually through photos and descriptions first.

You will then narrow down which prospective parents you would like to meet. The adoption agency will set up a meeting between you and the prospective parents where you can ask them any questions you might have and get to know them. Then, you get to decide who gets your baby.

Expect to Have the Opportunity to Stay in Contact

There are two kinds of adoption, open and closed. Open adoptions are adoptions in which the birth parent or parents are able to stay in contact with the adoptive parents and the child. This could be in the form of letters or emails with pictures a few times a year or even in occasional visits.

Expect to have the opportunity to choose an open adoption situation if that is what you would like. If you would prefer not to have an open adoption, be sure to let your adoption agency know right away. Closed adoptions are often easier to get to go through because some prospective adoptive parents are not as comfortable with birth parent involvement.

Expect It to Be Challenging

Placing your baby for adoption, while a wonderful thing to do, is not always easy. Finding the right parents for your baby can be a challenge. The emotions you feel can also make the process challenging.

It is a good idea to work with a counselor or therapist when you are planning to place your baby for adoption. They can help you deal with these emotions and support you throughout the adoption process.

Knowing these things to expect when you place your baby for adoption, you can be sure you are ready for the process and everything that goes into it.

About Me

Making A New Family

I always wanted to have a child, but after I finally got pregnant, I was nervous to find out I was expecting twins. I couldn't believe that in a few short months I would have a family of my own, but I knew that it would be hard. I decided that I wanted to do everything I could to create a strong, stable family, so I started investing more and more of my time into my family. I spent a lot of time working with my kids to help them to understand moral values, and now that they are five, I am proud to say that they treat others with an immense amount of kindness.
